Every summer that I lived in my cape house in the woods I would place my bird feeders outside to watch the birds fly and zoom around. I enjoyed watching wild birds very much, but I had a little problem. My little problem was I couldn't keep the squirrels and chipmunks out of my bird feeders. I wasn't sure how to keep them away and wanted to badly.
I began doing some research to find out some different ways to keep squirrels and chipmunks away. Thankfully, I discovered a solution. That solution was mixing cayenne pepper into the bird seed mix I placed into the bird feeders.
When the chipmunks and squirrels go eat from the feeders it makes their tastebuds go crazy, but doesn't hurt them. Oh, if you are worried the hot spices will keep your birds away and may even harm them don't because birds do not have any taste buds and can not taste the hot spices at all.
The second best way to keep squirrels and chipmunks out of your bird feeders is to make one specifically for them. Then, place the feeder one hundred feet away from where you're putting your bird feeders. This will also help teach the squirrels and chipmunks which feeder is for them and which one is not. As soon as they taste the spicy seed in the bird feeder they will learn quick that, that one isn't for them. Then, when they taste their food in their feeder without tasting the spice they will know that one is the safe one to eat from when they want a snack.
The third best way to keep squirrels and chipmunks away is to place crinkled tin foil on the out side of the bird house. When the squirrels and chipmunks step on the crinkled tin foil it will create a sound that will scare them and shoe them away from the bird house fast and more than likely the chipmunk or squirrel will remember it and not come back. Don't worry about scaring the birds away using the tin foil because the birds are light enough and won't cause the crinkle sound when landing on it because they are light and full of air.
These ideas are just a handful of the ways you can keep squirrels and chipmunks away from feeders. For more information on how to keep these critters away safely view the sources below.
