The rain and muggy weather has brought those horrible little sugar ants into our home. They seem to hangout in the kitchen the most even though it is spotless. I hate having a dirty home, but these little insects sure make me feel like I am living in one.
Since we have moved into this old farmhouse, we brought five years ago, these little bugs have been coming around each spring. We have tried pesticides to rid them away, but those do not seem to work. We have tried bleach and still have not seen any results for making this annoying problem go away. We got so sick of wasting our money on bug killing chemicals that I ended up doing some of my own research and coming up with my own solution, which does work effectively at getting rid of these creepy crawlers from the home.
The solution I came up with was a coffee vinegar spray because ants simply hate the acids in coffee and vinegar. Now, anytime these black bugs decide to invade my home I spray down all the surfaces including my walls and cabinets with the solutions along with the entryway the insects decide to crawl in through to get into my house. Although, I will say I am spraying the stuff at least once a day to keep them away. However, it is so worth it because it does work and the solution is a natural alternative for deterring ants away without causing harm to them or to you.
Creating the Solution
To make a strong ant repelling solution you will need to make at least twenty-four cups of hot strong organic coffee. You will also need twenty-four cups of strong white vinegar as well. Once the coffee is made pour it into a large heat safe bowl or bucket and add in the vinegar. Next, combine the ingredients together with a stirring stick or large long spoon. Then, as soon as the solution is cooled down a bit, you can carefully pour it into the spray bottles and start using it up to wipe down surfaces.
Using the Solution
To use the solution simply spray it directly onto the areas the ants seem to crawl all over the most. Doing this, will help wash away their trail and prevent other ants from using it. After, wipe down the area with a cloth and continue onto to other areas the ants seem to invade such as cabinets, certain corners on the floor or wherever it is they are coming in. Sometimes I even take dry coffee grinds and pour some into a wide mouth jar. After, I place the jar without a lid on right at the ant’s entryway and this prevents them from coming in. Ants hate the scent of coffee.
Now, you may also use the solution for washing your floors, bathrooms and other surfaces in your home as well. Although, I will say be careful using this solution on hardwood floors since the acids in the vinegar and coffee can be a bit harsh. I should also warn you, the house would smell like a coffee shop, if you do decide to use this solution, but at least you will be free of a serious ant problem.
To help prevent ants from continually coming into your home you should use the solution daily for cleaning all the surfaces in your home. This will help keep the scent of the coffee and vinegar lingering around long enough to help deter the ants. In addition, it will also help keep the ant trails gone so new ants cannot use them to come back into your home.
If you feel like you are out of solutions for ridding ants from your home, your not. Give this coffee and vinegar one a try and see if it works for your home. I know for us it has and I do hope it does for you as well. I wish you all the best with your annoying little problem.
