The craft I am about to talk about in this article is for all you sea shell collectors and beach lovers out there. The craft I have been doing to display my sea shells and enjoy them all year is by making a sea shell shadow box using all the sea shells I have collected over time.To make a sea shell shadow box, you defiantly need sea shells, a wooden shadow box with a glass frame, a bottle of Elmer's glue, some paint, paint brushes, and some sand art sand. All these materials can be found in a craft store for fewer than twenty dollars. If you are not sure what a shadow box is and what it looks like check the link attached to my article to view one.
Now, to begin making your sea shell box, you will want to take any dirty sea shells you may have and rinse them in hot water to remove any extra sand that may be on them. Once you have cleaned all your dirty sea shells you will then dry them with a paper towel or cloth and place them onto the table you will be doing your craft at.
The second thing you will want to do is to take your shadow box you have gotten at your local craft store, and begin removing the back of the shadow box in the same manner you would a picture frame, by removing the metal latches and freeing the cardboard backing. Once you have the cardboard back from the shadow back, you will want to lay it flat on the table facing the same way as it was facing inside the shadow box so you are directly looking at it.
The third things you will need to do is to take your bottle of Elmer's glue and cover the entire flat surface of the cardboard backing you have just removed from the shadow box that is facing you. Once you have the glue all over the cardboard backing of your shadow box, you will then want to take your paint brush and brush the glue into one even layer.
The fourth step would now be to take your bag of sand art sand and pour a layer of sand onto the cardboard backing of your glued shadow box covering the layer of glue completely with sand. Once you have covered you glued cardboard backing with sand you will allow it to dry over night, or for about 12 hours.
Once your glued sand has dried to the cardboard backing of your shadow box, you will then want to grab your sea shells and arrange then all to fit onto the sanded cardboard backing and then gluing your sea shells into place with the Elmer's glue. The when you have all your sea shells glued to the sanded backing of your shadow box, you will allow them to dry to the sanded cardboard backing over night again, or for another 12 hours.
Mean while, while your sea shells are drying to the sanded cardboard backing of your shadow box, you will begin choosing a colored paint and begin painting a thin layer of paint all around the wooden frame of your shadow box until it's completely covered with the color paint or paints you have chosen to use. Make sure you do not get any paint on the glass part of your shadow box, and if you do wipe it off immediately. Then you will need to allow the painted frame of your shadow box to dry for about 4 hours.
Now, when both your painted wooden frame and the sanded sea shell covered cardboard backing of your shadow box have dried, you will then gently place your cardboard backing back into place just as you would place a picture frame back into place. You will then have a painted frames sea shell shadow box to display in any room of your home. I would highly recommend placing your shadow box under lighting to give it a shadow like affect. You have now learned how to make and display your sea shells inside a shadow box. I really hope you have enjoyed learning how to do this craft. For more information on how to make different kinds of shadow boxes check the links attached to my article! Have fun!
Are you always out buying soy candles and spending loads of money on them? If you are, I would say it's time to stop and start making your own soy candles for a lot less money so you can have more soy candles to burn that last so much longer.Making homemade soy candles are very simple and easy. Did you know you don't even have to go buy jars to make your soy candles in and that you could make a perfect sized soy candle using recycled baby food jars? Did you know you could make scented colored soy candles in the microwave in less than 3 minutes? Well you can, and all you need for materials are; cleaned out baby food jars, medium candles wicks, candle dye, scented candle oils, a large bag of shaved melting soy wax, a plastic measuring cup, a glue gun, a bag of glue gun sticks, a spoon, and a microwave.
If you are not sure where to find candle making materials, you can find them at local craft stores such as; Ben Franklins, A.C. Moore, Michel's, or department stores such as, Wal-Mart and K-Mart. The price range for the material you will need to make the soy candles with is in between twenty five to thirty dollars possibly forty maximum.
Now in order to make these lovely soy candles, you will need to make sure your baby food jars are all cleaned out and ready to be used. Then you will heat up the glue gun with a glue stick in it until the glue has melted inside the gun and is ready to be used. When your glue has melted and is ready to be used, take your medium candle wicks and place a small amount of hot glue onto the bottom of there metal tabs, and then stick the glued metal tabs down into the center of each baby food jar you have. Once you have the candle wicks hot glued into the center of your baby food jar, you will then need to let the glue dry and harden for about five minutes.
Now, while your glued wicks are drying inside of your baby food jars, you can then begin taking your bag of shaved melting soy wax and place two cups of wax into your plastic measuring cup, and then place the soy wax filled plastic measuring cup into the microwave for about 3 minutes, or until the soy wax is completely melted. When your soy wax is completely melted, then you can take a bit of your scented oil and colored dye and add a few drops into the melted soy wax and take a spoon and mix the oil and dye into the wax until it is completely colored.
After you have melted, scented, and colored your soy wax, you can then take the liquid colored scented soy wax and begin pouring the soy wax into each baby food jar until you have filled each jar three quarters of the way up. You do not want to fill your baby food jar all the way up to the top because you will not be able to light your candle. Once your baby food jars are filled with the liquid melted soy wax mixture, you will need to allow them to harden at room temperature for about eight hours.
Then when your soy wax has harden inside the baby food jars with the wicks sticking out a bit, you can the light them with a lighter or match and enjoy the light scented aroma and happy feelings the candle will give you. You will then have made microwaveable soy wax candles out of baby food jars, and will have made many of them for when you have burned one soy candle completely out for half the cost of buying soy candles at a candy shop. When you run out of soy candles, you should have candle materials left over to make another batch of soy candles for your enjoyment and pleasure. You now know how to make microwaveable soy wax candles.
So you went to the bookstore and bought a ton of books to read, but now you have to buy some bookmarks to keep track of where you are in each book because you know you like jumping around from book to book and wont be able to remember where you are in each book. What if I told you to go ahead and buy the books, but not to buy the bookmarks and instead to make your own at home? Well, I am defiantly going to say don't buy anymore bookmarks from the book store, and tell you, you should make your own hand crafted flower pressed bookmarks.Flower pressed bookmarks are a unique and beautiful to mark that spot you don't want to lose in your books. Flower pressed bookmarks are also fun to do as a craft on a warm spring day when all the flowers have bloomed and your just dying to pick some of your favorite ones, but you know if you do there just going to die in a couple of days any way. However, if you turn those picked flowers into flower pressed bookmarks you can keep them all year round.
The materials you will need in order to make a flower pressed bookmark are; an iron, clear glue, wax paper, ruler, a hole puncher, yarn, a hand towel, and your favorite picked flowers. If you're not sure what type of flowers to use, you can use lilies, daisies, daffodils, roses, and basically any kind you can find. If its winter and you don't have any flowers outside growing, you can go to your local flower shop and get a few freshly cut flowers from there and they will work just the same as freshly picked flowers.
Now to begin making your flower pressed bookmarks, you will have to heat up your iron on low heat. Then while your iron is heating up, you can measure out a twelve by twelve square of wax paper and then cut it out to that size. Once your wax paper is all measured and cut out, you will need to fold your wax paper into thirds the long way like if you were folding a pamphlet back up. When your wax paper is folded into thirds, you will then take the wax paper and unfold it so you have three separate sections. Then you will take one or two of your picked favorite flowers and place them in the middle of your unfolded wax paper, you can then fold your wax paper back up into thirds with the flowers tightly secured in the center on the wax paper.
Once you have your flowers or flower folded up inside the wax paper, you can then place your hand towel on top of it and then take your iron and begin applying heat and pressure to the hand towel covered flower pressed bookmark for about five to ten minutes, or until the flowers and wax paper are completely flattened and pressed together.
Now, when you have flattened and pressed the wax paper and flowers together you can stop ironing and unfold the top half of your flower pressed wax paper with the flowers still being in the center of the wax paper, covered by one folded side of the wax paper, and put a very thin layer of glue on top of the folded layer of wax that is covering the flowers. Then you will take the unfolded side of the wax paper and fold it back up covering the top of the glued layer of wax paper sticking them together and then allowing it to dry.
Once your folded layer of glued wax paper has dried, you can take one end of the flower pressed bookmark and fold the end up about a half and inch up and glue the end together to ensure the flowers stay securely in the middle of the flower pressed bookmark. Once you have folded and glued one end of your flower pressed bookmark, you will then take your hole puncher and punch a hole at the top of the other end.
Now once you have punched a hole at one end of your bookmark, you can then take your yarn and cut twelve eight inch strains of yarn, and then take your strains of yarn and make sure they are all the same length and hold them all in your hand as if they were one string and lace it through the center of the hole you have punched at one end of your flower pressed bookmark and form a knot tightly securing your yarn to the bookmark. Once you have tied your yarn to one end, you should then half something that looks like a flower pressed bookmark that you now can use to mark those spots you don't want to lose in your books.
That's all there is to know about making flower pressed bookmarks. Hopefully you will stop buying bookmarks at stores and start making them at home and begin saving some of that wasted money. Have fun!
I know most of us have a hard time saving money and run into some sort of financial situation at some point in our lives, but what if money really did grow on tress? Would we still worry about our financial situations? I don't think we would! What if I told you money could really grow on trees, it was easy and fun to save and you would have more money? Well, you can grow money on trees and you can save simply by making a money tree.
Now of coarse you know money can't actually grow off a tree, but did you know you could grow a little tree from a seed and as it begins to grow you can place a dollar bill on each new branch it grows as a fun way to save and have more money for a rainy day? Well, you can.
All you need to grow this money tree are some; twist ties, a tiny cup filled with soil, a tree seedling, some water and, of course, some dollar bills.
Here's how the live growing money tree works. You will take a tiny cup with soil in it and plant a tiny tree seedling into it, place it in the sun and water it every day until the tree seedling begin to sprout from the soil. Now, as you begin to watch the little seedling turn into a beautiful little tree, you will begin seeing it sprout little branches. Now, for every little branch the tree grows you will take a dollar bill or any amount bill and roll it up like a scroll and take a twist tie and tie it to the new branch that has budded from the tiny tree you have planted in the cup of soil. This is why it's called the live money tree, because as the branches of the tree sprout, you will have to take a dollar bill and place it on each new branch, which is how you get the money to grow on trees. By adding a dollar bill to each new branch that sprouts from your little tree you will begin saving money and watching it grow little by little each day forming a better financial future, or forming a little fund for a really rainy day.
However in order to keep the money tree growing each day you most let it grow in the sun near a window every day, and you must water the tree a little bit every day since it is a live plant. You must also be faithful and place a dollar bill on each new branch that sprouts off the tree other wise you won't be able to watch your money tree grow. The live money tree is very easy to kill if you keep it in the dark, don't water it, and don't add a dollar bill to each new branch it sprouts, so take good care of it and be responsible.
The live money tree is great to use if you are trying to teach your children how to save money in a fun learning way. The live money tree is all great to use if you are trying to save for a car, a house, school, or anything new and special you might want in life. The live money tree is also good to give as a birthday gift to a family member and friend, however you have to tell your friend or family member that they have to place the dollar bills on the branches as they grow in order for in to work. It's kind of like giving someone a piggy bank as a gift, but they have to save and put the money in it.
Remember, money doesn't actually grow on trees, but you can grow a tree with money on it. Also remember if you grow a live money tree to let it grow in the sun, water it every day, and remember to place a dollar bill on each branch in order for you to watch your live money tree grow. If you can remember those things while trying to grow a live money tree, you should be able to grow a very successful money tree without a problem. Good luck and best wishes to those who try to grow the live money tree and please remember to have fun while doing it!
Working in a restaurant of any kind can get a bit messy. Now, of course, there are the usually ketchup and honey mustard spills, and now and again a tub of tomatoes will slip out of your hands and onto the floor. But what would you do if you spilled a gallon of olive oil or vegetable oil on the floor? Would you clean it up with a mop and bucket of hot soap water? If you did, it might take you a very long time to clean up. Would you go straight to the roll of paper towels and grab the whole roll of them? Well, I am going to tell you, you will probably need more than one roll of paper towels to clean up that kind of mess!
Now I have you thinking, I am sure! You're probably all wondering what the heck would clean up an oil spill in the kitchen fast and safely in little time. Well the answer to that question is very simple. The answer is oatmeal!
Now the reason why oatmeal is the best product to put down on a large kitchen oil spill is because the oats will safely and rapidly begin to absorb the oil from the floor until all the oil is removed. However I know some restraints might not have oatmeal handy, which is why I am going to tell you the next best things to use, which are cornstarch and breadcrumbs. Cornstarch and breadcrumbs have absorption abilities as well, but your best bet is to use oatmeal!
Now you probably all wondering how do I use oatmeal, cornstarch and breadcrumbs to clean up an oil mess? Well it's actually very easy to do. When you have an oil spill in your kitchen all you need to do is grab a box of oatmeal or any one of the items I already mention and dump a large amount over and on top of your oil spill and allow the oatmeal or any other item to sit and absorb the oil for about twenty minutes.
Once you have allowed your oatmeal to absorb the oil spill all you will have to do is grab a broom and dust pan and sweep up the mess. After you have swept up the absorbed oil oats from the floor and tossed them into the trash you can then take a mop and bucket of soapy water and mop the spot where the oil had spilled to remove any extra oil that may have been left behind. However, if you go straight for the mop and soapy water bucket first to remove an oil spill, you are only going to spread the oil mess further on your floor and possibly slip and injury yourself. Here is a quick tip for you always use dawn liquid soap when cleaning up the extra oil from your floor.
So now that you know how to clean up that oil spill on the floor safely and fast using oatmeal, will you do it? Or will you go straight to that roll of paper towel? Well I don't know, but let's just hope you go straight for that oatmeal for safe and easy clean up!
A couple of months ago, I was painting my nails in the living room while sitting on my big, comfy couch. While I was painting my finger and toe nails on my comfy couch, I managed to spill nail polish onto to the couch accidentally, and man was I angry at myself. Of course, knowing me I got up and went straight for the paper towel and began trying to wipe the nail polish off the couch by blotting gently, however this did not remove any of the nail polish and made the spill on the couch large. For those of you who have used nail polish, you know it's not easy to clean up or off of something because the nail polish dries fast.Eventually a couple days went by and I jumped onto my computer and did a little research to maybe find a product that would remove that nasty nail polish stain from my couch. After a couple of hours searching on line for a possible product that might remove that nail polish stain from my couch I gave up because I could not find a single thing. Then I got the bright idea to come up with my own nail polish stain remover solution. I used nail polish remover, paint thinner, warm water, an old rag, and of coarse some shout stain remover and thank god those products worked, but it was very difficult to do. Now for those of you who have spilled nail polish in your home and want to remover it I am going to tell you how to do it safely without harming the item you want to remove the nail polish spill from.
The first thing you want to do in order to remove a nail polish stain from anything is to pour a generous amount of nail polish remover onto the nail polish stain and then begin to gently blot out the stain using an old rag until your notice the nail polish coming out slowly. I going to tell you now that you do not want to rub the nail polish remover into your spilled nail polish stain because you could end up making the nail polish stain bigger.
The second thing you will need to do once you have gotten all the nail polish you could out of the nail polish stain using nail polish remover is to, then take a few drops of paint thinner and gently dab it onto the stain and then grab that old rag again and gently blot until all of the nail polish is gone from the item you are trying to remove the stain from.
The third step to removing your nasty nail polish spill would be to, then rinse your item with warm water and place a couple of dabs of shout stain remover to the area where you have spilled the nail polish and begin to remove any extra stains from that spot by gently blotting again using a new rag. Then after you have shouted your stain you can then gently rinse with warm water again and allow drying for a couple of hours. After a couple of hours your item should look as good as new again. However, I would not recommend this nail polish paint remover idea for items like stained wood furniture or painted wooded chairs and dresser, unless you are planning on refurnishing the items again because the nail polish and paint thinner will remove any paint and stains you may have on your furniture.
Now that you know how to remove nail polish stains from items safely, I would tell you to go try it out and try and remove that nasty looking nail polish spill from that item. Just remember do not use this nail polish spill remover solution of finished furniture and painted items!
How many times have you been to the store to buy a bag of tea light candles to use inside your tea light candle holders? How much money have you spent in the past year on tea light candles? Did you know you could save the little tea light tins your tea lights come in after the tea light had been burn out and refill them using tea light wicks and soy wax? Well you can and it's so affordable and easy to do!
Okay so when you go out and buy a bag of tea lights, and you take the tea lights home to burn in your tea light holders right, and when your tea light is all burnt out your take the little aluminum bottom that use to hold your tea light and toss it out right? Well don't toss them out. Instead soak your aluminum tea light bottom in warm water and remove any extra wax that might be in them and dry them out and save them. Once you have used all your bought tea lights and have tons of aluminum tea light holders left over, go out and buy a bag of shaved soy wax, some glue and some very small candle wicks. You can find all this stuff at a craft store.
Now once you have a bag of shaved soy wax, glue and some small candle wicks, you will take your aluminum tea light bottoms and glue new wicks into the center of them and allow the glue wicks to dry. The second thing you will do is melt your shaved soy wax in a double broiler on the top of your stove on medium heat until all the wax is melted. Once the wax is melted you will take a soup scooping spoon and scoop some melted wax into the spoon and then gently pour the wax into each aluminum tea light holder bottom. Once you have poured the wax into each aluminum bottom, you will then allow your tea light candles to dry and harden for about an hour. Then when your soy tea lights are hardened you can use them in your tea light candle holders. It's that simple and easy!
If you don't want to use the empty aluminum tea light bottoms you could use ice cube trays. All you would need to do is gently put candle wicks into each slotted individual spot standing perfectly up straight and then pour the hot melted soy wax into each individual slot making sure the candle wicks are still in place. Then all you would have to do is allow the soy wax candles to harden and then remove them gently from the ice cube trays and then you will have tons of little square tea lights. Here are a few little tricks if you find your tea lights sticking to the ice cube trays place them in the microwave for about ten seconds and then they should come right out, and before you fill your ice cube trays up with wax spray them with a little non stick cooking spray and I know for sure when you go and try to remove your tea lights from the ice cube tray they will come out easily.
You now should know how to make soy tea light candles pretty easily now, and you should also know not to throw those aluminum tea light bottoms out! You should also know by now how to make soy tea lights using an ice cube tray as well. So now you shouldn't need to go to the candle store to buy anymore of those darn tea lights right? Well I hope not and I hope you try this out if you are a heavy tea light candle buyer and lover!

Do your children love to color with crayons? Are your children sick of coloring with the same old crayons every day? Do your children have a box full of broken crayons and bugging you to buy them new ones? Did you know you could make new crayons out of old ones and in fact make multi colored crayons? Well you can make cool new crayons out of old ones so stop going out and buying new crayons every time your son or daughter wants new ones.Making multi colored crayons are super easy. All you need to make these multi colored crayons are, a box of broken or old crayons, a water bottle making ice cube tray, a large pencil sharpener, and an old double broiler. For those of you who don't know what a water bottle ice cube tray is, it is a ice cube tray that makes long skinny ice cubes that fit into your water bottles. You can find these ice cube trays at any home and kitchen store for less than three dollars.
The first thing to do to make your multi colored crayons is to melt some crayons of the same color in your double broiler on medium heat, but do not melt the crayons directly on the stove in a regular pan because you will have a giant mess. Once you have melted down your same colored crayons you will then pour the melted crayons into the ice cube trays, but only filling the ice cube trays half way up. Then after you will take the ice cube trays filled half way with melted crayon and place it into the refrigerator to cool until the crayon has harden up again.
Now once your crayons have cooled and harden in your ice cube tray, you will then take another batch of broken or old crayons of the same color and melt those ones down. Once you have melted those crayons down in your double broiler, you will then take your ice cube tray with the harden crayons in it and pour the melted crayons of a different color on top of the harden crayons filling the rest of the ice cube trays up. The once you pour the second color of melted crayon wax on top of the harden ones you can place the ice cube tray back into the refrigerator to hard up again.
Then once your crayon wax is harden, you can remove the crayons from the ice cube tray by simply turning the ice cube trays upside down and shaking it a little bit. You may even have a few crayons stick inside the ice cube tray, but all you would need to do is grab a butter knife and gently help it out by scrapping around the edges of the crayon. Once your crayons are out of the ice cube trays, they should have two different colors on each side.
The next step once you have all your crayons out of their ice cube tray is to take the large pencil sharpener and sharpen on end of the crayons until they have a point. Then you will have great new sharpen multi colored crayons without having to go to the store. You will also have a new jazzed up different kind of crayon your children can enjoy coloring with. That is all there is to making multi colored crayons
